How to Store Pure Gul So It Never Melts

4 min read • 16 Aug 2026

Pure jaggery has no preservatives—so how you store it matters. Humidity and heat are the enemies. Follow these simple rules and your block stays firm, flavourful, and ready for daily chai.

Airtight

Transfer gul from open packaging into a clean glass or steel container with a tight lid. Limit air exposure—oxidation dulls flavour and attracts moisture.

Cool & dry

Keep the jar in a kitchen cupboard away from the stove, direct sunlight, and steam. A stable 18–25°C environment is ideal. Never store near open windows during monsoon.

Fridge?

Refrigeration is unnecessary and can introduce condensation when you open the jar. If your kitchen runs hot, a cool pantry shelf works better than the fridge door.

Shelf life 12 months

  • Whole blocks: up to 12 months when stored airtight.
  • Powdered gul: use within 6–8 months for best aroma.
  • If surface softens, grate only what you need—do not re-melt repeatedly.

Treat your gul like a spice you respect: sealed, dry, and away from harsh heat. It will reward you with the same deep sweetness month after month.
